Did you know that eucalyptus is a poison and is not recommended by the Poisons Information Centre?
This includes baby versions that used to be considered safe.
Evidence proves that these rubs have no benefit, and in fact are doing more harm then good.
In the event of a young child being congested, vaporisers still are recommended – don’t add anything to them!
The steam breaks up the mucus making it easier to breathe. (In the event of severe breathing difficulty call 000 immediately.)
Remember, ingesting (swallowing) a poison isn’t the only way a poison can enter the body. Poison can also get in by inhalation (breathing) as well as being absorbed through the skin.
This includes all eucalyptus rubs.
What’s more, many of these rubs have other poisons in them that are not recommended such as camphor. Find out more about this, and many other updated topics at www.austin.org.au or call 13 11 26.
There are many first aid topics that have been recently updated and improved.
